Founded in London in 1890 by William Heinemann, the publisher launched with the successful release of The Bondman. Sydney Pawling joined the firm in 1893, and following Heinemann's death in 1920, Pawling sold the company to Doubleday. The publisher underwent several management changes after Doubleday sold his interest in 1933.
