With his award-winning installation The Story of the Lion at the Venice Biennale 1999 Georges Adéagbo also became known to a wider audience in Europe. In his works, the African-born artist presents arrangements of a diversity of objects and texts such as books, magazines, pamphlets, record covers and photographs from his native Africa as well as from the countries in which he realizes his installations. Georges Adéagbo thus offers up his interpretation of processes which lead to the emergence, replacement and dissolution of territories, of political and philosophical systems. The history that Adéagbo "rewrites" is plural and nonhierarchical. Nonetheless, it is not just about the democratic juxtaposition of facts and opinions meant to illustrate a colonial history of relationships that has developed between Western hegemony and Africa. Rather, it is intended to demonstrate the very process of writing history. This first monograph-like book about Georges Adéagbo features 13 installations by the artist from the period since 1994. The artist: Georges Adéagbo, born 1942 at Cotonou, Benin. Numerous solo and group exhibitions, among them participation in the Venice Biennale 1999 and the Documenta11 in 2002. Lives and works at Cotonou.
